Mass times for the Assumption 2026 - Day of Obligation

On 15 August, the Church celebrates Christ taking his Mother up to Heaven, a dogma defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950.

In Australia, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15 August) is a holy day of obligation.

“Holy Days of Obligation” are special occasions on which Catholics are obliged to attend Mass. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body” (#2185).
