Archdiocese Shrine of the Holy Family!

Saint Mary Star of the Sea is one of the most strikingly beautiful churches in Australia. Since 2001, this parish has been entrusted to the care of priests of Opus Dei. In 2012, St Mary's became Melbourne Archdiocesan Shrine of the Holy Family.

Conveniently located in West Melbourne, just a short distance from Melbourne’s central business district, St Mary Star of the Sea offers a serene space for reflection, worship, and architectural admiration. With its commanding presence on Howard Street, the church is a spiritual and historical landmark for city workers, residents, and visitors alike.

Transport and Parking

Metered street parking is available in the area around the Church.

The Church is a short walk from Flagstaff Station, and the number 57 tram stops right in front of the Church.


Photography & Videography

Visitors are asked to kindly refrain from taking photographs during Mass times and to be respectful of the space and privacy of those who are praying. No commercial photography is permitted.

Dress code and Behaviour
The Church is a place of worship, and visitors are asked to observe a modest dress code with knees and shoulders covered, and to remove hats inside the Church.

Pilgrim Information (Jubilee 2025)

Materials for visiting pilgrims, including pilgrim passports, and the Jubilee Stamp are available at the main entrance to the Church.
