Means to practice and grow in the virtue of Holy Purity
a) Chastity gives one control over concupiscence, which is an important aspect of self-control. This control is a task which lasts one’s whole life and presupposes a repeated struggle that can be especially intense at certain times. Chastity should grow continually through God’s grace and ascetical struggle (see Catechism, 2342).
b) “Charity is the form of all the virtues. Under its influence, chastity appears as a school of the gift of the person. Self‑mastery is ordered to the gift of self “(Catechism, 2346).
c) Important means to practice the virtue of holy purity are:
- Prayer: asking God for the virtue of holy purity with humility; frequenting the sacraments of the Eucharist and Penance, which are medicine for our weakness; daily reading and meditation of the Passion of Our Lord
- Determination not to commit sin. Carry a small cross in your pocket, and when tempted holding in your hand, kiss it, and say I would rather die than do something which I know to be a sin, or to be against God's will. (St Joan of Arc)
- Intense work; avoiding laziness.
- Moderation in food and drink, giving the body a little less than it asks.
- Guarding one’s eyes: seeing without looking; care in the details of modesty and refinement, in dress, etc.
- Avoiding conversations about impure things, not even to lament them; it’s stickier than tar.
- Avoiding reading questionable books, magazines or newspapers.
- Avoiding occasions of sin: internet, television, movies, shows, etc. The rule of conduct isn’t doing as others do. Christian naturalness often requires that we go against the current.
- Having the courage to be “cowards”: fleeing from temptations against purity without dialoguing with them.
- Being very sincere in spiritual direction and confession: it is better to speak “before” than “afterwards.”
- Forgetting about oneself.
- Being always aware that we are in the presence of God. Having a deep devotion and constant recourse to Mary Most Holy and Immaculate, St Joseph, her most chaste spouse, and the Guardian Angels. They are always by your side, praying for you, helping you.
