Godparents

One sponsor or godparent, male or female, is sufficient, but there may be two sponsors, one of each sex. At least one godparent should be a faithful Catholic.

A good godparent is not necessarily a best friend, but rather someone who will be a good example to one’s children, take an interest in them, and support their Catholic Christian upbringing.

It is preferable that the godparents attend the ceremony. However, exceptional circumstances may not permit a nominated godparent to attend. In such a case, a proxy may stand in for the godparent at the baptism.
